All You Wanted To Know About IP Transit and Its Importance
While working with technology, we might be familiar with an IP. But are we clear about what IP transit is and its importance? Well, let’s take a look.
What Do You Mean By IP Transit?
If you want to define it in simple terms, you can say it is a network of networks which also has its own hosts and traffic. The Internet is a huge space with lots of networks (Including all hosting providers, service providers and ISPs). But traffic has to pass from one network to another in order to reach the end users. To communicate in this manner to each other, they need the help of a larger network which connects all these smaller networks. This can be done in two ways – either directly or indirectly. As most networks don’t have a global presence, they need to communicate to the end user through other networks. This indirect communication network is called an IP Transit Network and the process is called IP transiting.
The direct communication network on the other hand, where networks with global footprint communicate directly is called Peering. Peering and transiting are generally confused with each other. IP Transit usage is generally measured in Mbps.
Benefits of IP Transit Service
Simple service: Transit allows providers to charge networks for carrying their traffic. It is a very simple service. Internet service providers have to just pay the provider of transit network a fixed amount, and they will take care of the rest. The files or data sent to them would be delivered when and where as required by the IP Transit providers.
Easy support: There is only one number that ISPs need to call when there are any issue with the Transit.
Clear Terms: Terms are much simple and clear in the case of IP Transit. It helps in making the Internet a better one.
Affordable rates: Compared to IP Peering, Transit rates are significantly lower. There are major providers to choose from and when bought in bulk volumes, it could be very low (Few dollars per Mbps). But at the same time there are providers who charge heavily.
Importance of IP Transit
By now, you would have understood that IP transit is the very existence of a global Internet. If not for IP transit, we would have few clumps of networks isolated from each other.
For business providers, IP transit is a basic necessity. As technology is evolving, IP transit is becoming more affordable around the globe. If you are looking out for an IP transit provider, you have good options to choose from.
Apart from the price, you need to look at factors such as the scalability, location availability and quality of the provider as well.
